I was always a great English student. Writing came naturally and easy. I figured it would be a natural career path. Fast forward to the University of Delaware out of high school (notice how I didn’t indicate the year?) I entered the university as an undeclared major and without giving it much thought, I declared English and Communications in my sophomore year. I liked writing well enough to declare it as a major and pursue concentrations in journalism and public relations (PR). I tried a stint at the school newspaper but it really did not hold my interest. PR was a bit more interesting since it involved event coordination, media relations and writing. Luckily I got a job in advertising and marketing pretty soon after I received my Bachelor of Arts.
For a while, I hopped from job to job in this field, including corporate communications. After a few years, I still wasn’t sure where I wanted to land my feet until I started working at Sun Chemical, a printing ink manufacturer. Although my focus was marketing research, I was given the additional responsibility of managing the market research community on the intranet. The intranet was very robust and allowed me to really delve into content management. I conducted user training and managed content managers for the community. I thrived in this environment which affirmed that the digital world was my bailiwick. After leaving Sun Chemical, I held similar positions that included Internet and intranet content management. I also was able to gain experience in Search Engine Optimization and HTML. Along the way I received an MBA from the University of Baltimore with a concentration in ecommerce.
For the past six years, I have worked at in online marketing. When I started, I updated content on the site through a content management system and now I manage the creation of content from a marketing standpoint. I ensure that the content is optimized for search engines while also making sure it communicates the right message to our customers. I enjoy what I do and was happy to have found the Digital Marketing and Communications program West Virginia University. I am looking to build upon my existing experience and look forward to venturing out to different digital mediums.
To get a bit more personal, I live in northern New Jersey, just a few miles from New York City. No, I don’t know Snooki (she is really from New York anyway) but do live close to the Real Housewives of New Jersey. I just returned from a vacation at the Jersey Shore (didn’t see Snooki) with my husband and son and a destination wedding in Miami (I was hoping to bump into the Real Housewives of Miami). I will let you guess what I watch in my limited spare time.
